Assisted living resident fatally shoots his wife, then himself
NORTH CANTON OH October 13 2021 – A couple at a senior living facility died Sunday night after the man fatally shot his wife and then himself, police said.
James Fee, 93, and Bonny Fee, 89, had been living in an individual apartment at the Sanctuary Grande, 850 Applegrove St. NW, Police Chief Frank Kemp said.
The facility’s website shows the location offers independent living, assisted living and memory care with nursing staff available on an on-call basis.
They previously lived in Massillon.
Police were called there at 7:17 p.m. in response to the deaths, Kemp said.
Investigators believe a nurse had checked in with the couple about 3:15 p.m.
The nursing staff expected James Fee to call a short time later for further assistance, but he never called so nursing staff members went to the Fees’ apartment.
“When they didn’t get the request, they went to check on the couple,” Kemp said.
James Fee had left a note for family members and had called other family members, leaving messages for them, the chief said, noting that “there were some medical conditions involved. I do not know the specifics on those.”
Kemp said no one reported hearing gunshots.
Family members couldn’t be reached for comment.
