Bail Bond Agent Arrested After Shooting at Wanted Man in Hanes Mall Parking Lot
WINSTON-SALEM, NC April 11 2018 – A Bail Bond Agent accused of shooting a gun at a wanted man in the Hanes Mall parking lot was arrested last week.
Thermon Desmond Sellers was arrested last Friday in Orange County, North Carolina for his and another bondsmen’s involvement in trying to take Nathaniel Taylor into custody.
Sellers is accused of shooting a gun at Taylor while he was trying to take him into custody near Hanes Mall in March. Taylor had several outstanding orders for arrest.
Neither of the bail bondsmen who pursued Taylor are law enforcement officers.
Winston-Salem police say the evidence gathered didn’t support the original account of the events as described to them during their preliminary investigation. Sellers was arrested as a result of further investigation.
Sellers was charged with:
Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Moving Vehicle
Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill
Violation of City Ordinance Discharge a Firearm within the City Limits
Sellers, 31, of Charlotte, was released from custody under a $250,000 secured bond pending a court date of April 12.
Sellers is accused of shooting at Taylor’s car as Taylor drove into a car in the Hanes Mall parking lot and another car on Hanes Mall Blvd. Taylor turned himself in on March 22 after he was charged with two counts of Hit and Run, Careless and Reckless Driving and four Orders for Arrests.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey gave a statement on the arrest:
“I will not condone, nor will I tolerate any actions by bail agents that put the public in danger, particularly in such a public place as a large shopping mall parking lot. Our Bail Bond Regulatory Division is completing its review, and I’ll let you know when that’s done.”
A release from police on March 17 said Bail Bond agents with the state department of insurance tried to take Taylor into custody around 7:30 p.m. Taylor drove recklessly trying to avoid arrest after the agents approached his car.
