Bail enforcement, Tulsa police ends stand-off at dollar store peacefully
Oklahoma City, OK January 7 2019 – A standoff in southwest Oklahoma City ended peacefully Saturday afternoon.
Bail enforcer Lionel Biggers says it started during his pursuit of suspect Chris Elbert.
Documents show Elbert was wanted for numerous crimes, including felonies.
Biggers followed Elbert in his vehicle into the Dollar General parking lot on Southwest 59th Street.
The bounty hunter called police for their assistance.
“Once we got out and approached him he refused to get out of the truck. He said, ‘Y’all are going to have to kill me,’” Biggers said.
Police showed up with the TAC Team, the Oklahoma City Fire Department, and EMSA.
From there, several hours of negotiations began.
“Our goal in any situation like this is time is on our side, and that’s why it took so long. We wanted to make sure obviously the subject is ok and obviously our officers are ok,” Oklahoma City Police Officer Brad Gilmore said.
Loud pops confused onlookers during negotiations, but Oklahoma City officers say those were from gas and other non-lethal tools thrown toward the suspect’s car, a method that eventually drew him out peacefully.
“He finally decided to get out of the vehicle and we took him into custody,” Gilmore said.
With Elbert in the back of a police car, shoppers were able to go home safely Sunday evening.
“He didn’t want to give up, which I don’t understand why. The only thing I can think of is he’s going to the penitentiary,” Biggers said.
