Bessemer police shoot, wounds Alabama man at sporting goods store
BESSEMER, Ala. May 10 2018 Authorities say a police officer responding to a report of theft at an Alabama sporting goods store shot the suspect in the shoulder.
State Bureau of Investigation spokesman Lt. John Riley tells AL.com that there were witnesses and surveillance footage of the May 4 shooting at Hibbett Sports in Bessemer. Authorities say 45-year-old Bobby Fowler Jr. got into an altercation with a store employee over shoplifting, leading employees to flee the store and call 911.
A responding Bessemer officer entered the store and shot Fowler. Riley says he couldn’t discuss what led to the shooting.
Fowler was booked into the Bessemer City Jail after his release from the hospital over the weekend. He’s charged with criminal trespassing and misdemeanor theft of property.
It’s unclear whether he has a lawyer
