Beware of This Tool Being Used by Burglars
Charlotte NC March 20, 2024
Police across the country are sounding the alarm about a new method that burglars are using to break into homes and businesses.
At one time, burglars would cut telephone lines so that a signal could not be sent to police or to a monitoring station, thus disabling burglar alarms.
Fast forward to the twenty-first century where everything is digital and wireless, and burglars have a new tool that does the same thing.
Signals being broadcasted by alarm systems are now having their Wi-Fi blocked which essentially prevents the signal from being sent to a monitoring station, the owner’s cellphone or any other monitoring source, allowing burglars to gain entry into homes without detection.
Blocking the Wi-Fi cuts the feed from alarm systems, cameras, or any device connected to the Wi-Fi rendering them ineffective.
Because of this, police are now warning residents to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to enhance their home’s security due to the new concerns raised over community safety.
Some tips to prevent this issue includes:
1-hardwire alarm systems and cameras, preventing signal blockers from cutting off network connection
- use a two-tier method of sending alarm signals
3-secure gates and strengthening security around property by installing sturdy locks
4-enhance exterior lighting and utilize motion-activated lights
5-install backup batteries so that security systems can provide continuous coverage outside of homes without disruption
6-install locks on second story windows and balconies
7-establish neighborhood watch services with trusted neighbors who can keep an eye on homes when residents are away
8-consider hiring house sitters when you’re out of town
We encourage residents to report any suspicious activity or concerns promptly,” to the police.
Forming a neighborhood watch, hire a private security patrol service and be alert to suspicious persons, vehicles or activities in your neighborhood could also prevent burglaries to your home or business.
