Birmingham Police Officer going beyond the badge to take care of community
Birmingham AL December 29 2019 In Birmingham, one police officer is going beyond the badge to make sure people in his community have what they need.
“Blessings come from not just receiving things, but your blessings come from what you do for others, so it’s always a great thing to bless other people,” says Officer Lane Harper of Birmingham’s East Precinct.
Harper is a Birmingham police officer, but to many, he’s more than that.
“When you have something special, it’s like a light. God has put a light on him to be this police officer that helps, gives, and enforces,” says Gwendolyn Taylor, a friend of Harper.
He patrols the east precinct, but also takes time out of his day, on the clock or off the clock, to give money to the homeless, pay utility bills, give clothes, and especially shoes, because he remembers when he didn’t have any.
“The things I do are out of my heart, everybody has to remember where they came from and people have to understand the things that are going on out here are way, much bigger than just your individual self,” says Harper.
He says his mission is to push people to a higher level of achievement, and his colleagues say he does exactly that.
“He puts in countless hours, if we need anything, we can just call him, he answers the phone on time, he doesn’t send you to the voicemail… I love him. He’s a great guy,” says Demarco Easley, one of many Birmingham police officers trained by Harper.
Harper also teaches self-defense here and all over the country, acts, and will soon be showcasing his skills in Justice On Trial The Movie 20/20, as he plays civil rights activist Medgar Evers.
He’s a police officer who goes above and beyond, yes, but if you ask him, his just a normal guy.
“We just wear this…. Just like anybody who works at Walmart. We’re providing a service…. That’s it,” says Harper.
Justice On Trial hits select AMC Theaters on February 16th.
Harper says he’s looking forward to traveling to California and New York for the movie premiers and especially is excited to see some of his favorite stars.
