Birmingham Security Guard Murdered
Birmingham AL December 29, 2021
A 42-year-old father killed when gunfire erupted outside of a Birmingham bar is being remembered for his love for others and for the simple life.
Shaun Rhudy died early Friday morning while he was working security at Marty’s PM on the city’s Southside.
Though not an Alabama native, Rhudy spent the majority of his life in the Birmingham area.
He obtained an engineering degree from Auburn University, was a graduate of Hoover High School, and had attended St. Paul’s School downtown from kindergarten through eighth grade.
“He exemplified the things he learned at that school (St. Paul’s) which was an appreciation for all of the people around him,’’ said his grieving mother, Pat Rhudy. “He was generally easy-going, non-judgmental, and liked everyone.”
The shooting happened, according to police, when 21-year-old Alonzo Johnson II of Greensboro, was refused entry by management into the establishment because of a prior incident there.
Johnson, police said, then was involved in a fight in the parking across the street, and gunfire ensued.
Rhudy, who worked security at Marty’s front door, and another man were struck by the bullets. Both were taken to UAB Hospital where Rhudy was pronounced dead at 7:41 a.m.
The second victim, whose identity hasn’t been released, was critically injured.
Johnson fled the scene when a vehicle picked him up. Police then issued an alert for the suspects’ vehicle.
West Precinct officers were later dispatched to I-59 southbound just past the Arkadelphia Road exit on a report of a vehicle fire. Officers noticed the vehicle on fire fit the description of the vehicle in the lookout bulletin and took both suspects into custody.
After police questioned the suspects, detectives obtained warrants for murder and first-degree assault against Johnson and two counts of hindering prosecution against 27-year-old Moundville resident Terrill Huey Jr.
Those close to Rhudy were shocked that he died in a crime of violence, and police said he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“He was just Shaun,’’ said longtime friend Chris Powell. “He was always fun.”
“He was a very, very smart guy,’’ Powell said. “He liked people. He liked working on stuff. He liked figuring stuff out.”
