Bowie School security and police stop man in stabbing incident
Bowie MD May 19 2017 An 18-year-old former Bowie School student was arrested last week and charged after he came to school, confronted a current student as part of an ongoing dispute, and stabbed the student with a pocket knife.
The student, who is a juvenile, suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to Bowie police.
Gabriel Marino, a Bowie resident, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, police said.
The incident occurred just before 11 a.m. May 10. Police said Marino came to school to confront another student with whom he’d had a disagreement. The two met up in a school hallway and a scuffle ensued.
At that point, Marino pulled out the knife and stabbed the other student in the head, according to police.
School security and the Bowie police officer that is regularly stationed at the school moved in and broke up the fight quickly. Many students did not even realize the incident had occurred, according to some parents.
“School security normally handles what happens on school property,” said Bowie Deputy Police Chief Dwayne Preston. “Things like this don’t happen that often.”
A note from principal Robynne Prince posted on the school’s website recounted the episode, which she called “an isolated incident.”
“The incident was stopped by BHS security within seconds, and no threats were made to other students or staff,” she wrote in the message.
“Prince George’s County Public Schools does not tolerate the possession of any type of weapon or look-alike weapon (i.e. pocket knife, firearm, or air compression gun) on school grounds in accordance with Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook guidelines.
Discuss with your child acceptable behaviors that support a positive school climate and the consequences, such as expulsion, for bringing weapons or anything that resembles a weapon to school. Please encourage your child to always immediately report the sighting of any weapon.”
