Brave Denver security officer shot helping others, needs help paying medical bills
Charlotte NC October 26th, 2023
On September 18th, Nolan Smith, a supervisor for a Denver Colorado security firm was on patrol and training a new employee. As he pulled up to the client’s property, the two security officers heard a pop and then a crash and saw that a vehicle had hit a power pole.
He quickly went over to the crash scene to ask if everyone was alright and while looking into the vehicle, saw a man running toward him with a gun and then suddenly he was shot in the abdomen and fell to the ground.
In the chaos, the shooter returned and put the gun to Smith’s head and told him to turn over his gun to him and his car keys or he would kill him. Fearing for his life, he complied.
The shooter fled and that’s when Smith pulled himself up, called 911, checked on the driver of the crashed vehicle who appeared to be deceased, and looked for his trainee.
An arriving police officer was flagged down by Smith and informed what had just happened.
Within minutes the scene was flooded with red and blue lights and Smith was rushed to an area hospital. Although he is healing, the bullet is still inside him and doctors say they can’t remove it unless he begins to bleed internally or suffers some other ailment from it.
The driver of the vehicle was working as a ride-share driver and died at the scene from his gunshot wounds.
The security officer in training was not injured.
To add injury to injury, Smith submitted a Worker’s Compensation claim with his employer’s carrier, but the claim was denied.
Rick McCann, Founder/CEO of Private Officer International became aware of the shooting and the issue with the insurance company and immediately got involved contacting both Smith and a local attorney.
Because the assault occurred on a city street, just feet away from the security company’s client, the insurance policy does not have to honor the claim.
Had the shooting occurred on the client’s property, the claim, more than likely would have been approved.
Now left with thousands of dollars of medical bills, Smith has set up a GoFundMe page asking for donations to cover his medical expenses.
Additionally, he has spent almost a month out of work.
Private Officer International asks that each of you consider donating to help this brave officer pay for his medical expenses.
He could have passed by like many would have done but instead, he put his life on the line, like many security officers do every day.
Additionally, Private Officer International has started an internal fundraiser and will be honoring Nolan with a Purple Heart for his bravery.
