Brevard corrections officer dies in crash that killed woman, critically injured child
MELBOURNE, Fla. May 7 2020 – A Brevard County corrections officer and a 65-year-old woman were killed in a two-vehicle crash in Melbourne Monday, according to the police.
The double fatal crash was reported around 7:15 p.m. in the 4600 Block of Eau Gallie Boulevard near Interstate 95.
Melbourne police said Stephen Goodson, 31, was driving a motorcycle eastbound from the Interstate 95 ramp when a van carrying multiple people turned across Eau Gallie Boulevard and into the path of the bike.
Josephina Carrillo, 65, was in the van at the time of the crash and died as a result of her injuries, according to police.
An initial release from MBPD indicated a child was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said Goodson has worked for his agency since 2016, serving as patrol deputy, a maritime security officer and most recently as a corrections deputy assigned to the transportation unit.
“Stephen was a very kind soul who will be deeply missed by all who knew him,” Ivey wrote. “In addition to the loss of Stephen, several other community families were impacted with a loss and serious injuries as a result of this tragedy. We ask that you keep Stephen’s family, friends, our agency members, and the families of everyone involved in this unfortunate incident in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.”
Melbourne police are investigating the crash.
