Burlington Coat Factory snags Stamford man for wearing clothes out of store
STAMFORD CT Jan 30 2018 — A local man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly tried to steal several items of clothing from a retailer on Broad Street.
Stamford Police Sgt. Jennifer Pinto said officers were called to Burlington Coat Factory after store security reported a shoplifting in progress.
Pinto said the suspect, who was identified as 18-year-old Nasyr Gardner, was seen entering a fitting room with several items and coming out of the room empty handed. Believing Gardner was attempting to boost clothing by wearing them out, Pinto said security guards moved in and inspected the fitting room.
“There were empty hangers and tags all over the place when they went into the dressing room,” Pinto said.
Gardner then allegedly made his way to the exit and attempted to leave he store, but security stopped him.
Pinto said Gardner refused the security guard’s request to go back into the store, and instead kicked and pushed the guard.
“There was a brief struggle before Gardner finally went back into the store,” Pinto said.
Gardner was then escorted to the back of the store, where he removed the stolen clothing which included a sweatshirt, sweatpants and a jacket, she said. In total, Pinto said the items were valued at about $150.
Gardner then attempted to flee the store again, but by that time Pinto said officers had arrived.
Gardner was arrested and charged with third-degree assault, sixth-degree larceny and third-degree robbery.
Pinto said the security guard, who complained of a “pain in his left leg” where he was kicked, was taken to Stamford Hospital and checked for injuries.
