Calvert police officer killed in accident on I-35
SALADO, Tex. July 5 2018 The Calvert Police Chief announced on Facebook that one of his officers was killed in an accident early Wednesday morning.
The wreck happened just before 3:00 a.m. Wednesday morning near Salado. It was on the northbound side of I-35 near the rest stops between Mile Markers 281 and 282. State troopers on the scene said a pickup rear-ended an 18-wheeler.
The pickup’s driver, James Arrick Jr., 32, of Calvert, died at the scene. Troopers said drowsiness may have been a factor in the wreck.
Arrick was an officer with Calvert PD for the last two years. According to Chief Hoyt, Arrick has been a peace officer for ten years. Chief Hoyt said in his post that Officer Arrick was well liked by his coworkers and the community.
The driver of the big rig, Juan Garcia, 64, was not hurt. Authorities don’t expect to file any charges.
Funeral arrangements haven’t been announced yet.
