Canton security officer shot in the neck
Canton OH Jan 4 2018
Police have arrested a suspect after a security guard was shot at a southwest Canton bar early Wednesday morning.
Detectives continue investigating the 2:43 a.m. incident at Hooch’s Pub, 1533 Cleveland Ave. SW, that left Russell Hazel, 33, of Canton, with a gunshot wound, said Lt. John Gabbard, who heads the Canton Police Department’s Priorities Bureau.
Hazel remained hospitalized and “his prognosis is unknown,” Gabbard said.
As the bar was closing, a confrontation occurred and Hazel was shot, Gabbard said.
“It was in the face or neck,” Gabbard said. Police said Hazel was in guarded condition.
“It was closing time,” Gabbard said. “I think there was an argument over clearing out the bar.”
The shooting suspect, Timothy F. Jackson, 32, was later arrested in Dover by the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, according to police.
Warrants were issued Wednesday charging Jackson with felonious assault and having weapon while under disability.
Police were called a year ago to the bar in response to a “shots fired” complaint. No injuries were reported and no one was arrested.
“There’ve been some fights, some problems (at the bar), but no shootings” since then, the lieutenant said.
Leandrous Harvey, 37, was shot to death in the parking lot on the north side of the building in April 2016, according to an article in The Canton Repository dated April 28. Anituan Harris was sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with the death. He had been charged with murder but the charge was reduced to involuntary manslaughter in a plea deal, according to another Repository article dated Nov. 10, 2016.
Gabbard said anyone with information about the shooting early Wednesday should call detectives at 330-489-3144 or leave a tip on the city’s Tip411 line by texting the word “canton” and then the tip to 847411.
