Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh lays off 76 security officers-outsources security department

Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh will lay off its 76 security guards by July and retain a private firm to handle its increasing security needs.
Carnegie Museums filed notice this month with the state Department of Labor & Industry indicating it will lay off 20 full-time and 56 part-time security guards by July 8.
These security officers provide security at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center and The Andy Warhol Museum.
“Our primary goal is to have a stronger, more adaptable security operation,” said Betsy Momich, the museum’s director of communications.
She said security needs have steadily expanded over the past decade, driven by a growing number of exhibitions and programs and rental of museum space. Many of the programs and rentals are at night.
Momich said the layoffs are not expected to result in any savings, adding, “That was not the motivation.”
The security guards will be offered the chance to work at a comparable salary for the private firm 3G Security Solutions of Pittsburgh, Momich said.
