Central Connecticut State University police officer fired for sexual attack on officer
New Britain CT December 1 2018
Central Connecticut State University officials have revealed that a campus police officer was fired after being accused of sexually assaulting another officer.
The New Britain school disclosed the firing Thursday and released a report about the department prepared by former state public safety commissioner Bernard Sullivan. Officials also announced changes aimed at improving the police agency.
Officials said an officer was fired in September after being accused of sexually assaulting a female officer, who did not want to press charges. No criminal charges were filed. A message the Associated Press left at a phone listing for the officer was not immediately returned Thursday.
Sullivan’s review followed a Hartford law firm’s probe that found a “fraternity-like environment” within the department. The firm faulted police for failing to investigate the sexual assault allegations against the officer.
“These reports are the culmination of an investigation that began almost a year ago under Dr. (Zulma) Toro’s direction. I support the swift action taken and any further actions necessary down the road in order to restore professionalism within the CCSU Police Department. I want to personally thank Bernie Sullivan for his help and expertise. I’m going to repeat what I’ve said before: We do not tolerate inappropriate sexual behavior and we do not tolerate failures by staff to take action when reported,” President Mark E. Ojakian, president of Connecticut State Colleges and Universities, said in a statement.
