Chattanooga police arrest Hamilton Place Mall shooting suspects
Chattanooga TN October 8 2021 The Chattanooga Police Violent Crimes Investigators have arrested two suspects in connection with the August 12, 2021 shooting incident that occurred inside Hamilton Place Mall.
Both suspects are 17-year-old juveniles.
One faces charges of Inciting to Riot, Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Vandalism.
The other faces charges of Reckless Endangerment and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
A shootout at Hamilton Place Mall on Thursday evening.
It happened shortly after 5:45 p.m. near Rodizio Grill.
Police say there were two groups of people in the mall that knew each other. Police say at least one person from each group began shooting at each other.
Police originally believed a female’s leg was grazed by a bullet, but they later learned through video that she hurt her leg by falling on an escalator and was not hit in the shooting.
Police are unsure if this incident was gang-related but say there is no threat to the public.
CBL Properties, the owner of Hamilton Place Mall, responded to Channel 3 Friday with the following statement:
“The incident is still under investigation by CPD so specific questions about it or the investigation will need to be directed to them. We will continue to work with them and as they investigate this incident.
We appreciate the quick response from CPD and other area agencies and we’re grateful that no one was seriously injured. We take the concerns of our customers, employees, and the Chattanooga community very seriously and providing a comfortable environment is our top priority. As part of our normal security protocol, we had security and CPD officers on-site last night when the incident occurred and will have an increased presence throughout the weekend.
We review our security procedures on an ongoing basis and will do so in the wake of this incident and make any adjustments necessary.
Our code of conduct, which is posted at all mall entrances and the mall website, is that weapons of any kind are not permitted on property.”
