Chicago- 33 people shot, 6 fatally, in 13 hours
Chicago IL Aug 21 2017 At least 33 people were wounded, 6 fatally, within 13 hours from Saturday to Sunday across the city in separate shootings, which includes an attack in the West Pullman neighborhood that left one man dead and wounded six other people.
In the West Pullman neighborhood on the city’s Far South Side, a man was killed and six other people were wounded in a single attack about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot of a banquet hall used as a nightclub, police said.
They were all in a large parking lot in the 11900 block of South Loomis Street when a man inside a black SUV opened fire at the crowd, police said. The shooter then drove off.
A man, whose age and identity was not yet known, was pronounced dead at the scene. A white sheet covered the man’s body on the pavement near the entrance of the hall’s door. A white BMW sports car, with one of its door still open, was next to the body.
Six other people were shot during the attack. Police did not immediately have information about each victim’s condition or which hospital they were taken to.
A 30-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman and a 33-year-old woman were each shot in the leg, police said. A 32-year-old man was shot in the abdomen. A 31-year-old woman was shot in the left leg, and a 36-year-old man was shot in the buttocks.
An eighth person, a 40-year-old man, was hit by the shooter’s SUV during the shooting, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center to be treated for a broken ankle.
In the most recent fatal shooting, a 30-year-old man was fatally shot while he was stopped at a traffic light about 5:10 a.m. in the 3800 block of South Archer Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood, police said.
A vehicle approached, and someone inside fired multiple times, striking the man in the head, neck and arm. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
A 32-year-old man was fatally shot and two other people were wounded in a drive-by shooting about 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the 7700 block of North Ashland Avenue in the Rogers Park neighborhood, police said.
They were standing on the sidewalk when someone in a Ford SUV opened fire. A 32-year-old man was shot in the neck, and he was pronounced dead at Presence Saint Francis Hospital, police said.
A 23-year-old man was shot in the hip, and a 23-year-old woman was shot in the neck. Their conditions were stabilized at Presence Saint Francis Hospital.
About 2 a.m. Sunday, a 22-year-old man was shot dead in the 1000 block of West Maxwell Street in the University Village/Little Italy neighborhood, police said.
He was standing on the street when two men pulled up in a car and shot him multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body of the 22-year-old man, who had been wearing red, could be seen near the playground for the John M. Smyth Elementary School. On the side of the school’s building, a mural stated, “The motivation for me … is telling me what I can’t be.”
The trees along Maxwell Street were lined with fliers announcing the upcoming filming of a popular television show, “Chicago Fire,” in the neighborhood.
A man at one point approached the crime scene with his hands in the air. “Don’t shoot,” he told officers. The man soon walked away with two other people.
Across the street, a group of men drank in the Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments.
About 30 minutes earlier, one man was fatally shot and another man was critically wounded in a shooting about 1:25 a.m. Sunday in the 7000 block of South Paulina Street in the West Englewood neighborhood.
A group of people were standing outside when a car pulled up and someone shot into the group, police said.
A 22-year-old man was shot multiple times, and he was pronounced dead at St. Bernard Hospital.
A 23-year-old man was also shot multiple times. He was in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.
In the Englewood neighborhood about 4:20 p.m. Saturday, a 24-year-old man was shot in the face, chest and arm while he was in the 6300 block of South Carpenter Street on the South Side, police said.
He was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 4:32 p.m.
He was identified as Cornell Verner, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
A total of six people were wounded in two separate triple shootings that took place within 20 minutes from each other on the city’s West Side.
About 11:30 p.m. Saturday, a dispute broke out between a large group of people who were in the 5000 block of West Ferdinand Street in the South Austin neighborhood, police said. The dispute ended when shots were fired by someone, striking three people.
A 30-year-old man was shot in the chest and in his right leg. He was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. A 62-year-old man was shot in the left leg, and his condition was stabilized at West Suburban Medical Center. A 32-year-old woman was shot in the left leg, and her condition was stabilized at West Suburban Medical Center.
About a half mile away about 11:10 p.m. Saturday, three men were shot while they were outside in the 5100 block of West Chicago Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood, police said.
Two men who were wearing masks approached and opened fire. A 19-year-old man was shot in the left hip and left leg, and a 24-year-old man was shot in the left arm. Their conditions were stabilized at West Suburban Medical Center.
A 30-year-old man was shot in the back, and he was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
A 32-year-old man was grazed in the head after a Chicago police officer opened fire during an “armed confrontation” about 8:45 p.m. Saturday in Gage Park, police said.
Chicago Lawn District tactical officers were investigating a group of men possibly drinking in the park when they noticed one of the men had a gun, said Sgt. Al Stinites, spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.
A confrontation ensued between an officer and a man armed with a gun, police said. The officer fired one round, grazing the man in the head, Stinites said. The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
A gun was recovered at the scene, police said.

— In the Pilsen neighborhood, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the right leg about 3:45 a.m. Sunday while he was in the 800 block of West 19th Street, police said. His condition was stabilized at Stroger Hospital.
— About 2:15 a.m. Sunday, a 34-year-old woman was shot in the right foot during a drive-by shooting in the 5100 block of West Concord Place in the North Austin neighborhood, police said. Someone inside a passing Dodge Charger opened fire, striking the woman in the foot. Her condition was stabilized at West Suburban Medical Center.
— A 60-year-old man was shot in the right shoulder while he was driving about 1:35 a.m. Sunday on the first block of East 43rd Street in the Bronzeville neighborhood, police said. He took himself to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition.
— A 27-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot about 12:45 a.m. Sunday in the 4500 block of South Wood Street in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. He was heading north in a car when someone shot him in the head. He then crashed into a tree. He was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital.
— About 10 p.m., a 36-year-old man was shot in the left leg while he was walking in the 2800 block of West Augusta Boulevard in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side. The shooter got out of a Chevrolet car and shot the man, police said. He took himself to Norwegian American Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
— A 16-year-old boy was shot in the right leg while he was walking about 9:35 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of North Lawndale Avenue in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. The boy had seen two groups of people shooting at each other near an alley, and he later realized he had been wounded by the gunfire. His condition was stabilized at Stroger Hospital.
— About 9:15 p.m., a 42-year-old man was shot in the left leg while he was sitting in a parked car in the 5800 block of West Augusta Boulevard in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side, police said. A black Jeep Wrangler pulled up next to him, and someone inside opened fire. The man took himself to West Suburban Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.
— A 17-year-old boy was wounded about 8:15 p.m. in the 4700 block of West Fulton Street, police said. He was shot in the left knee and was transported by ambulance in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
— Around 7:45 p.m. a 20-year-old man was shot in the head in the 900 block of West 83rd Street in the Gresham neighborhood, police said. He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. Witnesses told police a dark-colored SUV pulled up and began firing shots, striking the victim. The SUV then sped away.
— Two men were wounded around 6:30 p.m.in the 2700 block of North Monticello Avenue in the city’s Logan Square neighborhood. The men, 21 and 20, were walking down the street when an assailant in a dark-colored SUV pulled up and fired shots, hitting the older man in the head and the younger man in the left thigh, police said. They were both taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. The older man was in critical condition, and the younger man’s condition had stabilized.
