Chicago security officer fatally shoots man involved in shooting
Chicago IL August 3, 2023 One man is dead, and another is in critical condition after a Thursday afternoon shooting in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood.
Both men were rushed to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. One of them was pronounced dead, while the other remains in critical.
Police say at 2:50 p.m., at the intersection of 71st and Jeffery, a 22-year-old, who witnesses said was handing out free government cellphones, got into some sort of altercation with a 26-year-old man.
Police said that argument escalated and the 26-year-old shot the younger man in the torso.
At that point, police say an armed security guard working at the adjacent Walgreens saw the altercation unfold and shot the 26-year-old, who later died at the hospital.
The Cook County Medical Examiner identified him as Kyle J. Eastes.
“It’s unsettling,” one longtime neighbor told FOX 32. “It’s really bad to have to live in a neighborhood where you don’t feel safe.”
Neighbors said this is just the latest in a string of violent incidents centered around this corner.
“We have a hot corner here,” said Herman Bonslager. “They could sit a police car here, and it would stop a lot of things that’s going on. Like they do downtown.”
“I do applaud the police for their quick response,” said South Shore resident Ian McGhee. “I applaud the off-duty officer in Walgreens for responding as he did. He heard the shots in Walgreens. He did come out, identified himself, and did respond to fire.”
Sources say the security guard who got involved is also a part-time police officer at Cook County Hospital.
