Chiefs fans subdue man who attacked Union Station security guard
KANSAS CITY, Mo. Feb 13 2023
A scary incident was captured on camera Thursday night when a security officer was attacked at Union Station.
KMBC spoke exclusively to a bystander who stepped in to help a security guard who was being attacked.
“When I heard help, help again, I didn’t know who it was coming from. That’s when I was like, it’s time to go in,” said George Vial, one of the bystanders who helped the security guard.
Just hours after flying into KC from Ireland, Vial was enjoying the Chiefs Fan Zone in Union Station when he noticed a man and security guard wrestling on the ground.
“Right away, is just help. Like, help the situation. Like, you know, it was kind of one of those, you know, react and go, don’t think about it,” Vial said.
Vial noticed the man reaching for the guard’s gun, then he went in to help.
“There was a large number of kids, children, and families around.
If that guy got the gun, it could have been a bad situation,” Vial said.
Once the man was handcuffed, police arrived to take him into custody but not without the bravery of Vial, other bystanders, and the security officer who Vial calls a hero.
“I want him to know that we’re thankful that he was there and that he did it. and, you know, he took off. he took a beating, and he’s probably hurting today. So he needs to know that we all thank him,” Vial said.
Union Station security says the officer did have a mild concussion and stitches.
KCPD is charging the man in the attack with assault.
Union Station says they put a priority on maintaining a safe environment for their guests and surges in the size our of security team during events that draw larger than typical crowds.
