Cleveland Ohio police officer dies on duty
CLEVELAND, Ohio January 3rd, 2024 A 53-year-old Cleveland police officer died on duty early New Year’s Day.
19 News has learned the medical emergency happened at the Fifth District in the 800 block of E. 152nd Street. The officer was transported to University Hospitals, where he was pronounced deceased.
The officer has been identified as Victor Claudio, a 23 year veteran of the force.
“Officer Claudio loved the patrolling aspect of policing, was a great person, and an exceptional officer. He will be greatly missed,” said Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association (CPPA) Vice President Andy Gasiewski.
“Our hearts are broken, and our deepest condolences are with the Claudio family during this difficult time,” said Cleveland Police Sergeant Wilfredo Diaz.
Statement from Cleveland City Council:
“Council wants to express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the Fifth District police officer who died while on duty this morning. We lost one of Cleveland’s finest. We ask all Clevelanders to keep him and his family in your thoughts. His name will be released later.”
Officer Claudio’s cause of death has not been released at this time.
