Colorado Springs man charged with striking security guard with walking stick
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. May 6 2018 Colorado Springs police were called to the Dollar Tree on S. Nevada Avenue near E. Cheyenne Road Friday night for a reported assault on a security guard.
When officers arrived, they quickly took the suspect into custody. He’s been identified as 52-year-old Robert Norris.
The investigation revealed Norris was reportedly at the Dollar Tree for several hours and allegedly hid several items in his pockets while in the store along with a shopping cart with several more things. Security was eventually called on Norris.
Once security contacted the suspect, Norris allegedly swung a large walking stick at the guard, hitting him in the face.
Both the guard and Norris fell to the ground while fighting. At that point, a bystander was able to grab the stick from Norris to prevent it from being used again.
Officers arrived on scene shortly after to help contain the incident.
The security guard was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries.
Norris was taken to jail and is facing charges including second-degree assault and theft.
