Columbus MS June 26, 2022
A security officer was shot multiple times when he discovered that a person was burglarizing his vehicle.
The on-duty security officer working at the Greentree Apartments was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with the unknown suspect Thursday night, according to Sheriff Eddie Hawkins.
Hawkins said about 11:30 p.m. the security officer, who he did not identify, was working at the complex, located off of Lehmberg Road, and was making his rounds on foot. He was walking back to his car and saw someone inside burglarizing it.
“He confronted the person, and they exchanged gunfire,” Hawkins said.
The security officer was struck in the hand and the thigh, Hawkins said and was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle.
The suspect, who was apparently uninjured, fled the scene.
Hawkins said there are security cameras in the complex, but investigators have not gotten the footage yet.
The security has been treated and released from the hospital Hawkins said.
