Contract Security Stops Armed Man, Trying to Enter Downtown L.A. Federal Building
LOS ANGELES, CA July 16 2021— A man was stopped Wednesday afternoon trying to enter the parking garage of the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building in Downtown Los Angeles while wearing body armor and hauling a cache of weapons, according to authorities.
Contracted security personnel stopped a man driving a white SUV and “noticed a firearm inside the vehicle,” said Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Andra Higgs.
Security staff discovered the man’s car contained multiple loaded firearms and knives, she said. He was subsequently apprehended by Federal Protective Service inspectors, Higgs added.
The FPS is investigating the matter, with Los Angeles Police Department and FBI personnel assisting.
NBCLA aerial footage from the scene showed the SUV stopped at the guard shack at the entrance of the parking garage. Investigators had closed off the area and continued to search the vehicle shortly before 4 p.m.
Authorities have not identified the man’s motive nor have they said whether the case is being investigated as a potential domestic terrorist attack.
