Couple used fake bills at stores, then returned items for cash
Cottonwood Heights UT July 15 2018 Police in Cottonwood Heights arrested two people on Monday who they say used counterfeit cash to purchase items at a local business, then returned the items for real money.
Following the arrest, police found thousands of dollars in counterfeit bills — mostly 20s and some 100s — in the suspects’ vehicle.
Police were tipped off after security at a Home Depot in Cottonwood Heights recognized the female suspect, who had previously used counterfeit bills to make a purchase there, police said.
The woman was arrested after police arrived and she ran to her vehicle, where another man was waiting.
In addition to the counterfeit bills, police found thousands of dollars of real cash in the vehicle.
The suspects were arrested and identified as Helena Lucky and Clinton Curry, both from San Francisco. Police say the two were driving a rental car from California at the time of their arrest.
It appeared the suspects were using a higher-end printer or photo copier to print the fake money on resume paper, and police said the bills looked “close to the real thing.”
Now, they are investigating to find out if Lucky and Curry might have tried to pass fake bills at other businesses in the area.
