Crossing Guard, 88, Retires In West Hartford CT
WEST HARTFORD, CT Oct 5 20217— After 15 years of dedicated service to West Hartford Public Schools, crossing guard John Singletary, 88, celebrated his retirement on Friday. Singletary, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War who was a longtime employee of the Connecticut Department of Corrections, was a stalwart guard at his post on Flatbush Ave at Charter Oak School, according to West Hartford Police.
“John could always be counted on to serve the families at his post through inclement weather and illness,” Capt. Jeffrey Rose said in a press release. “John earned the respect of everyone he met from fellow crossing guards to the police officers who worked with him.”
Singletary is a Hartford native and looks forward to enjoying his retirement in his home state.
“I loved my job as a crossing guard and I will miss all my friends at the post,” Singletary said.
Fellow crossing guard Carolejane Barrett said that she was “fortunate to work with John and he set the highest example for all guards to follow.”
