Custer County Sheriff’s Office employee charged with felony theft
BROKEN BOW OK June 18 2018 — A former Custer County Sheriff’s Office employee is charged in Custer County District Court with theft of more than $1,500 from the sheriff’s office.
Kelli Estergard, 58, of Callaway was formally charged Friday in district court. She previously had been cited with felony theft and felony tampering with physical evidence, according to court records.
Estergard was originally cited for a theft of more than $5,000. However, the charge was amended before going to district court.
Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond said Estergard worked 33 years for the county. He declined to answer any other questions about the alleged incidents because of an ongoing investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol.
Estergard is scheduled to appear June 21 for an arraignment.
According to an earlier citation and complaint filed in court records, Estergard allegedly stole “movable property” at 116 S. 11th Ave., Broken Bow, which is the sheriff’s office address.
Estergard’s alleged theft occurred between July 23, 2015, and Jan. 30, 2018.
According to court records, on Jan. 30 she then allegedly destroyed, mutilated, concealed, removed or altered physical evidence in order to “impair” its availability in the “prospective official proceeding.”
In an April 2006 Hub story, Estergard was listed as office manager and part-time jailer for the Custer County Sheriff’s Office.
If convicted and not placed on probation, Estergard could face up to six years in prison, according to an updated complaint filed in court records.
