Dallas ISD security officer killed in I-35 crash
DALLAS TX June 15 2019 — It is an emotional time for the family and friends of a Dallas Independent School District security officer.
Michael Moore, who worked at O.W. Holmes Humanities/Communications Academy, was killed Monday in a crash on R.L. Thornton Freeway.
Staff and faculty from the school gathered Wednesday in the campus’ courtyard to pray. They were remembering the life of their colleague and friend.
“Right now we’re handling it by dealing with God,” said Coach Robert Moore.
The security officer was a guy full of life and laughter, according to friends. They say working with students was his personal passion and that he mentored many of them at Holmes.
“He shared his time, his money, anything that he could do to get a kid on the right track,” said Dr. Sharron Jackson, the school’s principal.
Dallas police say Moore was traveling south on R.L. Thornton Freeway Monday afternoon when he changed lanes and took a hard turn and lost control of his truck. The truck flipped seven to eight times and Moore was ejected from the vehicle.
”I just want to know how was it caused?” said Officer Brandon Lindsey. “We hadn’t heard nothing about it.”
The accident happened along I-35 near an area of ongoing construction, an area many motorists have been complaining about for months due to shifting lane patterns. Detectives say they do not know what caused Moore’s accident.
According to data reported to the Texas Department of Transportation, there have been 250 crashes along I-35 between the Dallas Zoo and the Highway 67 split over the past six months. Those crashes have involved more than 500 cars, more than 110 injuries, and two deaths.
“It’s going to be hard to start the next school year without him,” Lindsey said.
For now, the school staff says it is focused on honoring Moore’s memory, knowing the students will miss his presence at his normal spot in the school’s lobby.
”I just want to challenge people who work with young folks to be like Officer Moore,” Jackson said.
A representative from the McDowell Family Funeral Home says services will be held at West Dallas Church of Christ. A wake will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. The funeral will be held at the same church at 11 a.m. Saturday.
