Dayton Ohio police report over 60 car thefts in past week, urge preventive measures
Dayton OH January 10th, 2023 The Dayton Police Department is calling for residents to purchase vehicle immobilizing devices, lock car doors and not leave cars running after dozens of cars were stolen in the city last week.
In a post on social media, police said that 67 cars were stolen between Jan. 2-8, almost all of which were Kias, Hyundais or were left running with the keys in the car.
Kia, Hyundai thefts jump 658% in Dayton according to police.
Kia and Hyundai vehicles have been a target of thieves due to a security flaw that makes them easier to steal than other vehicles.
In August 2022, DPD said that the flaws have been present in Kia vehicles made since 2011 and Hyundai vehicles since 2015.
Police recommended buying immobilizing systems, GPS devices or steering wheel or brake system locks for owners of Kia or Hyundai models, and to never leave the vehicle unlocked while running with keys in the car.
