A private police officer shot and wounded a man Monday night outside an apartment complex in Southeast Washington, according to D.C. police.
The shooting occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Southern Avenue SE, in the Washington Highlands neighborhood, when two uniformed officers confronted someone in a vehicle who was barred from the premises and tried to get the person out of it.
But the car moved forward, striking one of the officers, police said. The second fired his service weapon and hit the driver and his own hand, police said
The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
Police said Tyshawn Wilson, 30, of Southeast, was arrested Monday and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (a car), unauthorized use of a vehicle, and unlawful entry.
Armed security guards in the District are known as “special police officers” and are licensed with limited arrest powers, typically on property at which they are employed.
They are not equipped with body-worn cameras, as D.C. police are.
