Decorated Bridgeport CT police officer dies suddenly
BRIDGEPORT CT January 6 2020— A decorated Bridgeport police officer died suddenly in Stamford Saturday night, according to city officials.
The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear.
Bridgeport Police Officer Jarah Matthews-Dixon and his family had deep roots in Bridgeport, said Scott Appleby, the city’s director of emergency management/communications and homeland security.
On April 21, 2008, Matthews-Dixon “fulfilled his dream of being a Bridgeport Police Officer,” Appleby said. This April would have marked his 12th year with the department.
In a statement, Police Chief Armando Perez said “Matthews-Dixon was a great officer, a kind person and he will surely be missed.”
Matthews-Dixon was most recently assigned to the Fusion Center at 999 Broad St., keeping an eye on city streets and working to prevent crime through Bridgeport’s camera system.
Matthews-Dixon had previously received the Distinguished Service Medal and the Medal of Merit.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Officer Matthews-Dixon at this time, along with all of his brothers and sisters of the Bridgeport Police Department,” said Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim in a statement.
Appleby said the police department offers its sincere condolences to the Matthews-Dixon family. He said funeral arrangement are forthcoming.
