Denver transit security shot-kill armed man
DENVER CO Aug 24 2017— A man was killed in a shooting involving two armed RTD officers at a light rail station on Wednesday night.
The shooting happened just north of the parking garage after 7 p.m. at the Sheridan station at West Ninth Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard on the Denver/Lakewood line.
Two security guards were patrolling the area on bicycles when they spotted a man lying on the grass, according to Barb Archer, Commander of the Major Crimes Division, with the Denver Police Department.
The security guards, who work for Allied Universal Security, approached the man to see if he was OK.
“He pulled out a gun, pointed it at them,” Archer said. “The officers backed up, one of them fell to the ground. The other security officer, fearing that his partner was going to get shot, fired his handgun at this male.”
“The male kind of rolled over, came back up with the gun, again pointed it at the security guard who was lying on the ground,” said Archer. “The partner, again fearing that guard was going to be shot opened fire again with his handgun.”
“The other security guard was able to get up on her feet and also shoot to protect herself,” Archer said.
The man was transported to the hospital but died from his injuries.
Archer said investigators can’t release information about the number of shots fired at this point.
The female security guard was transported to the hospital for “some injuries” but she was not shot, Archer said.
The officers’ names have not been released.
The name and age of the man who died were not released.
Archer said one surveillance camera captured part of the incident on video.
There was a large response from Denver and Lakewood police to the station, which is along the W Line that runs from Union Station to Golden.
Trains continued to run during the investigation.
