Destiny USA mall adds License Plate Readers

Destiny USA, one of the nation’s largest shopping malls located in Syracuse, New York, has taken a significant step towards bolstering its security measures by installing license plate reading cameras in its parking lots.
This initiative, launched about six months ago in partnership with the Syracuse Police Department and Flock Safety, aims to curb the incidents of repeated trespassing and shoplifting, thus enhancing the overall safety of the mall’s patrons and retailers.
The implementation of seven license plate reading cameras since August 2023 has proven to be a game-changer in the mall’s security protocol.
By scanning around 400,000 cars monthly, the system flags the vehicles of interest, facilitating immediate action by the security department. This proactive approach has led to several instances where individuals with a history of shoplifting or other misdemeanors were intercepted at the entrance, demonstrating the effectiveness of the technology in preventing potential crimes.
The collaboration between Destiny USA’s security department and local law enforcement, including the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and State Police, has extended the impact of the license plate reading cameras beyond the mall’s vicinity.
By sharing Flock Safety data with other agencies, the technology not only contributes to a safer shopping environment but also supports broader crime-solving efforts across the city.
With the ability to match vehicles involved in mall incidents with their owners, the system is a valuable tool in the ongoing battle against crime, highlighting the critical role of advanced surveillance technology in public safety.
