DeWitt NY man charged with robbery in Best Buy theft
DEWITT, N.Y. Jan 16 2018— A Cortland man was determined to leave the Best Buy in DeWitt with a PlayStation 4 game console this weekend, police said.
But when a security guard tried to stop Adam Underwood from leaving the store at 3401 Erie Boulevard E. without paying for the PlayStation 4, DeWitt police say Underwood pushed past the guard. He then took out a pocket knife and threatened the guard, DeWitt police Sgt. Brenton White said.
“He really wanted that PlayStation 4,” White said.
Store cameras caught the robbery on tape. A witness also was able to provide officers with a license plate number, and description of the suspect and his vehicle as he drove away, White said.
DeWitt police responded to Best Buy at 4:37 p.m. Sunday. The license plate helped officers quickly find Underwood, who drove back home to Cortland after the robbery, police said.
“We were on his tail,” White said.
An officer was able to reach Underwood on the phone after the robbery. Underwood then turned himself into the Cortland City Police Department Sunday night, White said.
DeWitt police officers drove to Cortland to bring Underwood back to Onondaga County.
Underwood did not tell police why he stole the PlayStation 4, White said. Instead, he asked for a lawyer immediately, the sergeant said.
DeWitt police charged Underwood with first-degree robbery and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies.
Underwood was then sent to the Onondaga County Justice Center Sunday night and arraigned on the charges Monday morning. He remains in jail Monday night without bail, jail records show.
