Dover library to get armed guard after indecent exposure incident
Dover DE July 28 2019
Reports about inappropriate behavior at Dover Public Library prompted City Council to approve an armed security guard.
Michelle Hughes, the library assistant director, said staff wants to offer full-time security in order to address the safety concerns.
“The cadet program has been wonderful for the Dover public library, but they have not been able to provide security during all open hours,” Hughes said.
An incident was reported at the library on June 22 in which a 17-year-old working at one of the computers saw a man exposing himself, according to Dover police reports.
Authorities were able to identify and apprehend the suspect.
Hughes said there was no security at that time to immediately address the incident.
The three cadets that currently guard the public library are paid through the library budget. Details on funding for a security guard at the library are not defined yet, but the proposal was approved.
Dover Public Library is not the first to get an armed security guard. Both branches of the Wilmington Public Library have guards, according to officials.
