Employee accused of stealing $122K from Greensburg electric supply firm
Greenburg PA April 16 2019 A Loyalhanna Township woman was arrested Thursday on multiple criminal charges of stealing more than $122,000 from a Greensburg electrical supply firm where she worked.
Deborah L. Baker, 51, was charged by city police with theft, theft by deception, forgery, identity theft, criminal use of a communication facility, tampering with records and receiving stolen property. She was released on $40,000 unsecured bond pending a preliminary hearing May 2 before District Judge Chris Flanigan.
Detective Sgt. John Swank said Baker worked as a cashier at the electrical supply firm off of South Main Street and part of her job was processing customer payments.
Between July 2016 and March 27, when the thefts were discovered, Baker would deposit checks from some customers into her own personal account, Swank said in court documents. After the issues involving check deposits were discovered in March, Swank said company officials also found Baker “would accept credit cards as payment, then void the orders and refund the money onto her personal Visa debit card.”
During an interview with Swank, Baker said she “was having financial difficulties.” Baker also told Swank that her husband was not working because of “addiction issues,” according to court documents.
During the 32-month period when the alleged thefts occurred, Swank said Baker issued $45,800 in fraudulent refunds from the business into her personal accounts and deposited another $76,178 in check payments into her accounts.
Swank said that Baker maintained in the interviews that no one else at Scott Electric was involved.
Baker could not be reached for comment. An attorney was not listed in online court documents.
