Eugene man arrested after throwing rocks at library security and pulling a knife on police officers
EUGENE, Ore. Sept 5 2021– A man was arrested after allegedly committing several crimes in the Eugene downtown area on Thursday.
Police say it started at about 7 p.m. when officers responded to the Eugene Public Library, 100 West 10th Ave., after a report that someone was throwing rocks at security guards. They said the man, who reportedly had a knife, also threw a rock through the window of the library.
Suspect Allan Moten, 30, of Eugene was located in West 8th Alley, police said.
Officers followed Moten and ordered him to stop, but he ran off into a large group of people in the area of 11th Avenue and Willamette Street. Police said a 35-year-old man entered the intersection, and Moten struck him in the head, knocking him to the ground.
A less-than-lethal sponge round was used, causing Moten to stumble, but he managed to run south on Willamette Street, police said. A detective blocked Moten’s path, and the suspect reportedly turned east around the corner of a restaurant on the 1100 block of the street.
The detective reportedly saw Moten trip, falling to the ground, and saw him swing his knife at them, nearly striking them.
Moten was taken to the Lane County Jail on charges of assault in the first and second degrees, criminal mischief in the first and second degrees, second-degree disorderly conduct, interfering with a police officer, and third-degree escape. He also reportedly had two warrants for his arrest.
