A female suspect was killed on Christmas Eve in an officer-involved shooting near Browning Street after running toward an officer with two knives in her hands.
The suspect was being investigated for shooting a man near Irwin Road, carjacking a vehicle at Domino’s Pizza on East Cypress Avenue about 7 p.m., and then driving through the front of Walmart on Dana Drive.
According to a Redding Police Department press release, officers responded to a call from neighbors near Irwin Road reporting gunshots about 7 p.m. and found a man suffering from two gunshot wounds.
A woman was killed in an officer-involved shooting following a series of crimes that included a shooting, carjacking and driving into Walmart on Christmas Eve, 2020.
Officers learned a female suspect had made statements about being involved with the shooting said she was going to shoot additional people, according to the press release.
The suspect approached a woman outside Domino’s on Cypress Avenue in Redding. The victim told police the woman was armed with a handgun. The victim wrestled to take the firearm from her but failed and the suspect drove away in the victim’s car, police said.
The suspect reportedly drove through the front of Walmart in Redding in a vehicle that matched the carjacking victim’s vehicle, RPD said.
“The vehicle drove through the front doors of Walmart and around the cashiers’ area before exiting the store before officers’ arrival,” police said.
Both of the store’s entrances were blocked off on Christmas but the store had reopened Saturday.
An officer found the vehicle parked and with no one around near an apartment complex by Old Alturas Road and Browning Street. Several officers responded to the scene.
Another officer spotted the female suspect walking toward the intersection and then she started running north on Browning. Police said she was armed with two large knives and held one in each hand as she ran.
After a foot chase, the woman approached a motorist going south on Browning before turning around and advancing toward the police officer, who fired his handgun in response, according to the press release.
“The officer discharged his duty handgun and shot the female suspect,” police said.
The woman received medical aid and was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The man who was shot earlier near Irwin Road is in the hospital and is expected to survive his injuries, police said.
The name of the female suspect is not being released until her family is notified.
Detectives with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office and investigators from the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office went to the scene to help with the investigation into the officer-involved fatal shooting.
Police said the name of the officer who shot the woman will not be given at this time.
The Thursday night crime spree is still being investigated. Redding police asks that anyone who witnessed the events Thursday night to contact investigators at 225-4200.
Adding to the Christmas Eve chaos, a driver crashed into a marked Redding police car while officers had the roadway blocked at Browning Street and Friendly Road.
No one was injured but officers said they determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash and placed the motorist under arrest.
