Flint’s Powers Catholic High School adds K-9 security team
FLINT, Mich. Sept 2 2017
A Michigan school has added a new member to its security team and this new officer has quite the nose on them.
Flint’s Powers Catholic High School newest security team members name is Pepper.
She’s only 20 months old, but she’s already the talk of the school.
It’s not just new students roaming the halls of Powers Catholic High School this year. Pepper is the newest member of the security team as the school year kicks off and together with Peoper’s handler, they’ll also be roaming the school halls.
“She’ll be here on a weekly basis around the hall,” said head of security David Forystek. “She’s friendly, she has no-bite training, she doesn’t bark a lot. She’s very low impact in the school setting.”
But Pepper is trained in more ways than other police dogs.
“Trained in contraband that can’t come into the school,” Forystek said. “Right now, she is trained on several illegal drugs, also cigarettes, and we’re working with her on alcohol — things that are contraband that the students should not have on school campus.”
While school administrators say no problems have been seen at the school, they hope having Pepper around can keep it that way.
“It helps the students, to give them that option to say no I can’t do it,” he says. “They’ve really got a good deterrent there at the school.”
Right now, her support is only being used at Powers Catholic High School and the Michigan School for the Deaf, but her handlers hope to see her help other schools in the future.
