Florida school security guard, school faces lawsuit over excessive force claim
Kissimmee, Fla August 25, 2022
A middle school security guard isn’t immune from a student’s claim that he used excessive force when he intervened in a dispute between the student and his mother over a bad haircut, the Eleventh Circuit said Monday.
Seventh grader Trellus Richmond was arguing with his mother over his haircut when he arrived late at Kissimmee Middle School in Kissimmee, Fla.
Despite it being against school rules, Richmond refused to take his hoodie off his head.
When Richmond pushed his mother, office staff called the school security guard, Mario Badia. When Badia arrived, he confronted Richmond, cursed, and mocked him.
The two then got into a scuffle and the teen was injured.
Now, both the school and security guard faces a civil lawsuit.
