Florida Security Officer Dies From Violent Attack
Volusia County FL April 4 2021
A security officer attacked earlier this week by a 14-year-old at a juvenile group home in Enterprise has died in the hospital, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported Saturday in a news release.
Michael Ellis, the 52-year-old security officer at United Methodist Children’s Home, was hospitalized Tuesday after he was punched in the back of the head multiple times.
He was found unconscious and taken to the hospital, where he was put on a ventilator.
He died Saturday after he was removed from life support, the Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.
“Let’s keep his family in our prayers as they lay their loved one to rest,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood posted on social media along with the news.
“Right now, the important thing is that the family knows they are in our hearts at this difficult time.”
Witnesses reported Ellis was bringing Christopher Carpenter back to the facility after finding him off campus and then a fight broke out in the teen’s room, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Carpenter was taken to Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Daytona Beach. He was charged with aggravated battery on a uniformed security officer.
The Sheriff’s Office investigation remains active pending results of an autopsy, Gant said in the news release. No further information was available for release.
