Four suspects charged with repeated thefts from Fairhope Alabama Walmart
FAIRHOPE, AL Sept 17 2017
Four suspects were arrested following what the Fairhope Police Department describes as a “complex investigation involving numerous officers and investigators” looking into numerous occurrences of theft.
Other arrests are possible.
The victims listed are the Walmart store at 10040 Fairhope Ave. and the Murphy Oil gas station at the same address.
The Fairhope Police Department provides the following account:
Between Tuesday, Aug. 8, and Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, numerous thefts were reported at Walmart and Murphy Oil. Store personnel had observed, or later determined by reviewing surveillance video, that the following thefts had occurred: Eight televisions were stolen in four separate incidents, two hover-boards were stolen in one incident, and gasoline was stolen from the Murphy Oil Station in the Walmart parking lot in another incident.
All the thefts were connected, and that the same persons were involved, according to Fairhope PD.
Police said that:
- On Aug. 8, one 43-inch television was stolen, with a total value of $378.00. The suspect was identified on video as Jasmine Rankin. Another involved person has been identified, but the name is not considered public record until an arrest is made or a warrant is signed.
- On Aug. 29, two 43-inch televisions were stolen, with a total value of $676.00. The thefts were discovered after the fact, but the suspects were later identified on video as Jasmine Rankin and other individuals who cannot be named until a warrant is obtained or an arrest is made.
- On Aug. 30, three 43-inch televisions were stolen, with a total value of $874.00. The suspect was identified on video as Jasmine Rankin. Other involved persons have been identified, but their names are not considered public record until an arrest is made or a warrant is signed.
- On Sept. 7, two televisions were stolen, with a total value of $406.00. The suspect was seen leaving the store and employees notified the police, but the suspect left in a car. He was later identified on video as Darril Rankin.
- On Sept. 11, a gas drive-off (theft of gasoline) occurred at the Murphy Oil Station in the Walmart parking lot, with a total value of $20.63. The Fairhope Police Department was called and two suspects were arrested, Dericka McCarty and Traneiria Neal.
- On Sept. 11, two Razor Hover Boards were stolen, with a total value of $596.00. The thefts were discovered after the fact, but the suspect was later identified on video as Jasmine Rankin. Other involved persons have been identified, but their names are not considered public record until an arrest is made or a warrant is signed.
On Thursday, Sept. 14, at approximately 6 p.m., Walmart loss prevention notified the Fairhope Police Department that two of the suspects had returned to the store. Responding officers detained Jasmine Rankin and Darril Rankin.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, the following arrests have been made:
- Jasmine Simone Rankin, age 20, of Mobile. Ms. Rankin was arrested at Walmart on 09/14/2017 on three counts of felony theft of property and one count of misdemeanor theft of property, all related to previous thefts. She was booked into the Fairhope Municipal Jail but has since been transferred to the Baldwin County Corrections Center.
- Darril Lamar Rankin, age 22, of Mobile. Mr. Rankin was arrested at Walmart on 09/14/2017 for misdemeanor possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, attempting to flee from a police officer, and misdemeanor theft of property. He ran from officers when they attempted to detain him, and when caught, he resisted. He was found to possess marijuana and paraphernalia. The theft of property charge is related to the previous theft. He was booked into the Fairhope Municipal Jail and has been released pending appearance in court.
- Dericka Demetra McCarty, age 22, of Mobile, was arrested leaving Murphy Oil on 09/11/2017 for attempting to elude a police officer and theft of property (gas drive-off). She was booked into the Fairhope Municipal Jail, then released pending appearance in court. Additional charges are expected related to the thefts from Walmart.
- Traneiria Lamonica Neal, age 19, of Mobile, was arrested leaving Murphy Oil on 09/11/2017 for theft of property (gas drive-off). She was booked into the Fairhope Municipal Jail, then released pending appearance in court.
Investigators with the Fairhope Police Department have identified a total of six (6) persons involved in the thefts; the four arrestees named above plus two additional suspects who cannot be named until warrants are obtained or arrests are made.
