G4S security employees assigned to Savannah College of Art and Design file lawsuit
SAVANNAH, Ga. October 17 2018 Some security professionals who work to protect the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) say their own company’s negligence opened them up to identity theft.
Employees of G4S, the security company at SCAD, say their names, social security numbers and pay rates were sent to their fellow workers.
“It all starts with an email sent from an individual’s private home, over an internet connection that isn’t secure. They sent it to Yahoo! and Gmail accounts that contained everyone assigned to work for the period of October 1 providing services to SCAD,” explains Attorney Abda Quillian.
Nearly 60 people had information included on the list. Out of those, 39 are now suing G4S for invasion of privacy.
“You’d think that if anyone would have a heightened awareness of this and what it could do to somebody would be a security company,” Quillian said.
She claims that instead of attempting to inform people about the breach, the company tried to hide it.
“The company was never ever, going to notify their employees that we sent your information over a connection that isn’t secure. They have yet to do anything about it. If it hadn’t been employees informing employees that would have never happened,” Quillian explained.
The employees are suing G4S for monetary damages and several years of credit monitoring and protection.
News 3 contacted both G4S and SCAD for comment on the information reveal and lawsuit.
Following Monday evening’s newscast, G4S sent the following statement: “G4S does not comment on ongoing litigation. However, we take these matters seriously and we are conducting a thorough investigation.”
SCAD is not a defendant in this suit. They have yet to respond to News 3’s request for comment.
