Ga. deputy sheriff, security officer exchange gunfire with armed suspect
Fulton County GA June 11 2018 A man was shot in an incident involving a Fulton County deputy after he fired at patrons in a restaurant parking lot, the GBI said.
The incident happened about 1 a.m. Sunday outside the Cozumel The Mexican Cantina in the 5000 block of Old National Highway, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.
Two Fulton County sheriff’s deputies were working an off-duty, part-time job when an altercation involving restaurant patrons broke out in the parking lot.
“The subject fired at least two shots at additional patrons,” Miles said.
“During the altercation, a deputy and a security guard fired their weapons. The subject was struck and taken into custody.”
It’s unclear if the deputy’s shot actually hit the man, Miles said.
The shooter, who was not identified, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
A woman who was not involved with the incident also was shot and taken to Grady, according to the GBI. She is listed as stable.
No officers were injured.
The GBI will investigate the shooting, which is normal protocol in cases involving use of force.
It will be the 42nd such investigation in 2018, Miles said. There were 97 in all of 2017.
