Athens-Clarke police arrested an entering auto suspect Tuesday after a security officer at the Athens-Clarke County Library on Baxter Street called to report a man tampering with vehicles in the parking lot.
A responding officer reported he spoke to the security officer, who said she saw the man pull on the doors of two cars and told him to stop.
The man began walking away, but the security guard told police she took a photo of the suspect and was able to identify him when a suspect was apprehended and brought back to the library for a positive identification, according to the report.
A 40-year-old Athens woman told police that her car was broken into and her son’s school bag was stolen. The officer was able to view the library surveillance tape, which showed the suspect taking the bag, police said.
Steven Luke Crawford, 34, whom police described as homeless, gave jail officials an address in Monroe. He was charged with entering auto and criminal intent to commit a theft.
