Gretna LA November 25 2018
Anthony Christiana, deputy chief of the Gretna Police Department, has died after a battle with cancer, the police department announced Friday morning (Nov. 23).
He had been with the department for 37 years.
Gretna Mayor Belinda Constant remembered Christiana as an “incredibly dedicated man to his profession and his community” and said he exemplified “police work at its finest.”
Christiana would have never retired from police work, Constant said, noting that Gretna police protection and the community was “part of his DNA.”
“He was never off the job,” Constant said. “He would have never retired from that work.”
The mayor said that Christiana was an incredible friend and the protection of Gretna was always a clear focus.
“This world has definitely lost one of its good men,” she said.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto recognized Christiana’s nearly four decades spent with the Gretna Police Department.
“Service of that length and dedication cannot be replaced and his loss will be felt throughout the law enforcement agencies of the metro area,” Lopinto said in an email.
Visitation will be held Sunday (Nov. 25) at St. Joseph Church in Gretna, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. for family and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the public, as well as on Monday (Nov. 26), from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. A funeral mass is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. Monday with interment at Westlawn Cemetery in Gretna.
