Gun the size of a pen found at Boston Logan Airport TSA security checkpoint
Boston MA August 20, 2022 People may have thought James Bond traveled out of Boston this past weekend after Transport Security Administration (TSA) officers found a small tube-shaped single-fire gun the size of a pen at Boston Logan Airport on Saturday.
New England’s TSA division said the .22 caliber single-shot firearm was found at one of Boston Logan Aiport’s security checkpoints Saturday afternoon.
TSA officials released an image of the secret-agent-style firearm positioned next to a pen. The firearm appears to be just as long — if not slightly smaller — as the writing instrument.
Previously in July, TSA reported that in the first six months of 2022 the Transportation Security Administration detected more than 3,000 guns at airport checkpoints nationwide.
On average, TSA stops 17 guns at checkpoints a day, TSA spokesperson Lisa Farbstein said. She estimates that at this rate the number of guns detected will surpass last year’s total of 5,972 guns detected, which Farbstein said was a record for the highest.
People looking to travel with firearms should look to the “Transporting Firearms and Ammunition” travel guide.
According to the guide, airport travelers can only transport unloaded firearms in a locked container inside their checked-in baggage.
“Carelessly traveling with a loaded firearm is a public safety concern, considering it could accidentally be discharged during a search. I strongly urge all gun owners to ensure they know where their firearm is before traveling to the airport,” TSA’s Federal Security Director for Massachusetts said in a statement.
