Gunman in custody after ambushing NYC police twice in 12 hours
NEW YORK NY Feb 11 2020 — Police said they have a man in custody in connection with two police-involved shootings in 12 hours in the Bronx.
Authorities described the man, Robert Williams, as a “career criminal,” who in 2002 was convicted of attempted murder, WPIX reported.
New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea says the same gunman was responsible for back-to-back shootings targeting New York City police officers.
Shea says the gunman shot and wounded an officer in an unprovoked attack on a patrol van.
Surveillance video captured the suspect walking into the 41st precinct in Longwood—and then opening fired around 8 a.m Sunday.
Police said the suspect stopped shooting when he ran out of bullets — before diving on the ground and tossing his gun, WPIX reported.
An officer was shot in the arm, authorities said.
This shooting comes after an attack on two officers Saturday night, just blocks away.
One of the officers in that shooting was hit in the chin by a bullet but is conscious and recovering in the hospital.
Both officers are expected to fully recover.
Shea said the wounded officer is alert and conscious in the hospital.
Mayor Bill DeBlasio and New York police union leader Patrick Lynch called the shooting an “assassination attempt.”
“This is absolutely unacceptable in this city or any place,” DeBlasio said. “In this country, anywhere in this world.”
