Hamilton County School Board approves funding for School Security Officers
Hamilton County OH June 19 2021 At Thursday night’s school board meeting, the board voted to approve the recruitment and hiring of up to 25 School Security Officers as long as the Hamilton County Commission provides additional funding.
Hamilton County Chief Operations Officer said those funds may come from unexpected tax revenue.
On Wednesday, Hamilton County Commissioners unanimously approved the county’s budget which only accounted for 32 School Resource Officer positions and 19 School Security Officers leaving many schools in the district without either.
Sheriff Hammond explained difficulties hiring within the Sheriff’s Office is partially to blame for the current shortage. Some school board members are concerned about hiring before school starts in the fall.
“Or is this a ploy to get these people trained, then yank them from us again like they did before and they’re out at C.C.A.? Are they going to be in our buildings keeping our kids safe,” Hamilton County School Board District 5 Representative Karitsa Jones questioned during the meeting.
Commissioners said their goal is to have an officer in every school in the district by later this year, but they have not specified a timeline.
