Hilton Head restaurant patron fought customers, security guard and deputies
Hilton Head SC Jan 30 2018 A man was charged with resisting arrest, public disorderly conduct and marijuana possession early Saturday morning after he allegedly fought customers and a Hilton Head Island restaurant security guard before turning his fury on deputies and a patrol car.
Deputies were called to One Hot Mama’s around 1:30 a.m. after an altercation between a security guard and patron, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report. When deputies found the pair, the security guard was attempting to prevent the man from hitting him. As deputies separated them, the man “immediately” tried to attack the security guard again and “became aggressive” toward a deputy.
Deputies told the man several times to stop moving and put his hands behind his back. He attempted to hit two deputies instead, the report said. The struggle only ended when a deputy drew his Taser and threatened to use it.
Once the man was in handcuffs, the security guard told deputies that earlier in the night, he was told about a patron causing a disturbance in a restroom. When the security guard went to check it out, he saw the man “attempting to fight customers,” the report said.
The security guard asked the man to leave, and walked the man out of the restaurant. The man allegedly became “aggressive” toward the guard and “attempted to strike him multiple times.” The security guard wrestled the man to the ground until deputies arrived. No injuries were listed in the report.
After he was detained, he began to yell profanities at patrons in the area. After he refused to stop, he was charged with public disorderly conduct.
Deputies found a plastic baggy with marijuana inside in the man’s front left pocket, the report said.
“(The man) looked at the baggy and then looked back and me and stated, ‘are you stupid? It’s marijuana!’” one deputy wrote.
As deputies placed the man in a patrol vehicle, he once again became “agitated” and “began to resist.” The man refused to walk to the vehicle and wrapped his legs around a deputy’s leg, the report said. He also kicked deputies “multiple times” and, as he was placed in leg shackles, managed to land two kick’s to the deputys’ chests.
On the way to the Beaufort County Detention Center, the man removed his seat belt and was able to slide his handcuffed hands to the front of his body, even with the leg shackles on, the report said.
“He began to punch, kick and head butt the rear divider of my patrol vehicle,” a deputy wrote.
He was later booked into the jail and issued a trespass notice from the restaurant.
