Home Depot LP Agent Shot In The Head
CHICAGO IL March 28 2021 A security officer who was shot at a Home Depot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood late Thursday afternoon has now been identified as Kevin Lockett.
A police officer was also shot and wounded while chasing the suspect in the shooting.
Lockett was shot in the head when he got into a confrontation with a shoplifter.
Now his family is sharing just how quickly life can change. They want people to know he is a loving father, fiancé and friend.
His fiancée, Elaine Jones, visited him at the University of Chicago Medical Center for the first time Friday night. She said he was not in a coma but has not opened his eyes following surgery. She is determined that her wedding will still go on as planned.
Lockett was among several men trying to wrestle the gun away from a shoplifter. The horrible moment near 54th and Western, which was caught on cell phone video, almost cost Lockett his life. The man pulls a gun and Lockett runs toward it and is shot in the head.
“I’ve never seen anyone pull out a gun or anything like that,” said Larry Young, who shot the cell phone video as he was leaving the store. “After he put on his shoe, he stopped by the man to taunt him and basically walked off.”
“He’s still here. He’s still kicking and fighting. He’s a strong man,” said Jones. “I haven’t had a dry eye since last night.”
Lockett is a father of three. He’s worked security at the Home Depot less than a year.
“He’s not in a coma, but he hasn’t opened his eyes they still have some fragments in his head,” she said.
The man who shot Lockett ran off into a nearby neighborhood. He shot a Chicago police officer and was eventually shot and killed by a different officer. The injured CPD officer was released from the hospital Thursday.
As Lockett battles with a bullet to the head, his fiancée is optimistic about their future together.
“He’s a good one, and we don’t want to lose a good one,” she said. “I plan to be Mrs. Kevin Lockett real soon.”
